The New Nation Party (NNP) is a political party in Zambia, formed as a rebranding of the former Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) in 2025. The party is led by Dr. Nevers Mumba and has positioned itself as a significant player in Zambia's political landscape, endorsing President Hakainde Hichilema for the 2026 general elections.

History

The New Nation Party traces its origins to the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD), a major political party in Zambia since the early 1990s. In November 2025, the MMD underwent a rebranding exercise led by party president Dr. Nevers Mumba, officially changing its name to the New Nation Party. The rebranding aimed to revitalize the party's image and political agenda. Despite this change, there was dissent within the former MMD ranks, with rival factions rejecting the new party name.

Controversies

The rebranding to the New Nation Party led to internal conflicts, with rival MMD factions rejecting the change and causing a split within the former party.
