Laws of Zambia

From Chalo Chatu, Zambia online encyclopedia

Zambia has a 'hybrid' or 'mixed' legal system, formed by the a common law system inherited from the British and a customary law system inherited from indigenous Africans (often termed African Customary Law , of which there are many variations depending on the tribal origin). The Common law is administered by several high courts, which have authority to hear criminal and civil cases and appeals from lower courts. Resident magistrate's courts are also established at various centers. Local courts mainly administer customary law, especially cases relating to marriage, property, and inheritance.
