The Chingola Riots of 2025 were two major outbreaks of civil unrest in Chingola, a copper‑mining town in Zambia’s Copperbelt Province. Rooted in disputes over informal mining rights and forceful crackdowns by security services, the disturbances occurred primarily in April and again in late July 2025, resulting in multiple arrests, property damage, and widespread economic disruption.
Background
Chingola hosts a longstanding conflict between artisanal miners—commonly known as Jerabos—and licensed mining authorities. Jerabos often operate at the fringes of permitted mining zones. In early 2025, escalated enforcement by the Zambia National Service (ZNS) and police aimed at halting illegal operations around open‑pit sites intensified local resentment, particularly among unemployed youth dependent on informal mining livelihoods
Timeline of Events
April 2025: First Major Unrest
Early April: ZNS officers blocked Jerabo access to the Senseli/Chiwempala open‑pit site, igniting unrest among informal miners.
- Furious groups stormed Chiwempala Market, triggering looting of groceries and mealie meal across adjacent neighbourhoods of Antelope, Maiteneke, Twatasha, Mikiloni, and Lulamba.
- Social media and police reports confirmed live footage of residents seizing food supplies under chaotic conditions..
- Police arrested approximately 62 individuals, and multiple structures were damaged or burned during confrontations with security forces.
July‑August 2025: Second Wave
- 30 July 2025: A renewed eruption of violence began when Jerabos—again blocked from the Senseli mine—protested alongside mounting frustration among Chiwempala residents.
- Police intervened; 79 suspects were arrested, one civilian was fatally shot, and seven officers sustained injuries while attempting dispersal.
- Rioters reportedly set heavy equipment ablaze, blockaded roads, and forced closure of businesses; video footage documented violent clashes with law enforcement inside Chiwempala township.
- Business activity in central Chingola stalled significantly as security crackdowns continued into early August.
Aftermath
The Chingola riots spotlighted persistent socioeconomic inequities and governance gaps within Zambia’s mining ecosystem. In response:
Authorities commenced cleanup and reconstruction of damaged markets and shops.
Provincial leaders pledged to initiate dialogue with local stakeholders about formalising artisanal mining and potential inclusion in licensing frameworks.
NGOs and civil society groups highlighted the need for sustainable economic alternatives and critique over existing enforcement-heavy governance models
