From Chalo Chatu, Zambia online encyclopedia
Jump to navigationJump to search

Chalo Chatu recognizes that much of Zambia’s heritage has been passed down through generations by word of mouth. Oral history is therefore a valuable source of knowledge, especially for communities and topics that are under-documented or absent from written records. However, oral accounts must follow strict editorial procedures to maintain the reliability and trustworthiness of the encyclopedia.

Purpose of This Policy

This policy outlines how oral stories may be included in Chalo Chatu in a way that respects cultural traditions while maintaining editorial standards of accuracy, neutrality, and transparency.

Acceptable Oral History Sources

Oral history may be accepted if it comes from:

  • Recognized elders, historians, or traditional leaders
  • Firsthand witnesses of historical events
  • Local custodians of community memory (e.g., church leaders, teachers, headmen)
  • Audio or video interviews recorded and submitted with consent

Requirements for Inclusion

All oral accounts must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Clearly identify the **source of the oral account**
  • Provide **dates, locations, names, and context** where possible
  • Be submitted through the proper editorial process for review
  • Be marked as oral history and **separated from sourced factual statements**
  • Must not contradict widely established facts unless accompanied by strong supporting evidence

Verification and Documentation

Chalo Chatu may conduct verification of oral submissions through:

  • Follow-up interviews
  • Cross-referencing with other oral accounts or known records
  • Community validation where applicable
  • Documentation such as photos, letters, or family records to supplement the story

Editorial Review

Oral stories are **not published automatically**. They are reviewed by the editorial board and tagged appropriately to reflect their nature. They may appear in:

  • Designated “Oral history” sections within an article
  • Standalone pages clearly labeled as oral history

Limitations

Chalo Chatu does **not** accept:

  • Myths or folklore presented as factual history
  • Personal opinions or unverifiable rumors
  • Fictionalized accounts or dramatizations unless presented in cultural context

Labeling and Attribution

All oral histories must include:

  • The name (or approved pseudonym) of the narrator
  • Date of collection or interview
  • Context in which the story was shared (e.g., public meeting, family account)
  • A clear label such as: [This section is based on oral history and has not been independently verified.]

Preservation and Respect

Chalo Chatu is committed to preserving Zambia’s oral traditions in a respectful and dignified manner. Contributors are encouraged to work with communities, respect consent, and ensure that stories are shared truthfully and appropriately.
