Chalo Chatu:File Upload and Metadata Policy

This policy governs the uploading, naming, licensing, and metadata tagging of all media files hosted on Chalo Chatu.

Purpose

This policy ensures that all images, videos, and audio files uploaded to Chalo Chatu:

  • Are legally compliant and properly licensed
  • Contain sufficient metadata for archival, sourcing, and attribution
  • Reflect Chalo Chatu’s mission to preserve Zambia’s history with accuracy and integrity

What You Can Upload

Contributors may upload the following:

  • Original photographs taken by themselves or authorised field teams
  • Public domain images (e.g. pre-1964 colonial archives)
  • Creative Commons-licensed media (CC BY, CC BY-SA)
  • Government or institutional media issued for public use (with attribution)
  • Images posted by verified Zambian government accounts on social media platforms (e.g. Facebook, X, WhatsApp), provided they are not watermarked or restricted and are used in context with proper attribution.

What You Cannot Upload

  • Media taken from personal or unverified accounts without permission
  • Screenshots of copyrighted content (e.g. TV broadcasts, YouTube videos)
  • Watermarked images unless the watermark is from a recognised public institution
  • Edited or altered images that misrepresent the subject

Required Metadata

Every uploaded file must include:

  • A descriptive filename (e.g. Kalomo_Slave_Tree_2025.jpg)
  • Description of what the file shows (event, location, people involved)
  • Date the media was created
  • Location (district, province, site)
  • Source or photographer
  • License type (e.g. CC BY-SA 4.0, Public Domain)
