The Anglican Diocese of Lusaka is one of the dioceses of the Church of the Province of Central Africa and serves the capital city of Zambia, Lusaka, and surrounding areas. The diocese is headquartered at the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross, which is also the seat of the bishop.

History

The diocese was formally established in 1971, carved out of what was then part of a larger diocesan structure in Central Africa. The creation of the Diocese of Lusaka reflected the growing number of Anglicans in the capital and the need for dedicated pastoral oversight.[1]

Leadership

The diocese has been led by several bishops since its establishment. As of 2025, the bishop is the Rt. Rev. David Njovu, who has served since 2003. He is known for promoting ecumenism, education, and social justice.[2]

Structure and Parishes

The Diocese of Lusaka encompasses numerous parishes across the city and peri-urban areas, serving thousands of Anglicans. Some of the prominent parishes include:

  • Cathedral of the Holy Cross – Lusaka
  • St. John's Parish – Mtendere
  • All Saints Parish – Chelstone
  • St. Peter’s Parish – Kabwata
  • Holy Nativity – Chilenje

Mission and Outreach

The diocese is active in various social, health, and educational initiatives. It operates schools, supports health clinics, and partners with other denominations and civic organisations to address issues such as gender-based violence, HIV/AIDS awareness, and youth empowerment.[3]

Cathedral

The mother church of the diocese is the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, a major landmark in Lusaka built in 1962. It hosts national events, liturgical celebrations, and civic commemorations.[4]

Affiliations

The diocese is part of the Church of the Province of Central Africa, which includes dioceses in Botswana, Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. It also collaborates with the Anglican Communion on global issues such as climate change, development, and theology.
