The Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross is the principal church of the Anglican Diocese of Lusaka and one of the most prominent landmarks in Lusaka, the capital city of Zambia. The cathedral is the seat of the bishop of Lusaka and serves as a centre of worship, national prayer services, and major ceremonial events.
History
Construction of the cathedral was completed in 1962, just two years before Zambia gained independence from British colonial rule. It was designed to be a national Anglican place of worship, capable of hosting large congregations, state services, and ecumenical events.[1]
Over the years, it has hosted various national services, including thanksgiving ceremonies, memorials for national leaders, and interdenominational gatherings.[2]
Architecture
The Cathedral of the Holy Cross is noted for its modernist design, incorporating high arched ceilings and wide interior space suitable for large gatherings. Its structure reflects both African and British ecclesiastical architectural influences, symbolising a fusion of local identity and Anglican tradition.[3]
Role and Activities
As the headquarters of the Anglican Diocese of Lusaka, the cathedral oversees various social, liturgical, and community programmes. It hosts regular Anglican services, choirs, weddings, confirmations, and special liturgical festivals.
It is also a common venue for state and civic events, particularly during national periods of mourning or prayer.[4]
