Chilando Chitangala is a Zambian politician serving as the Mayor of Lusaka, the capital city of Zambia. She is the first woman to be elected directly as Mayor of Lusaka.
Early life and career
Details about Chilando Chitangala's early life are not widely documented. She started her political career as a councillor before becoming Deputy Mayor of Lusaka.
Political career
Chitangala was elected Mayor of Lusaka in the local government elections held on 12 August 2021, becoming the city's first female mayor elected by popular vote. She won with 278,687 votes.
As Mayor, she has focused on urban planning, social inclusion, climate change, and empowerment of marginalized groups. She serves as the Vice-chairperson of the Covenant of Mayors in sub-Saharan Africa, coordinating climate action among over 300 cities.
Recognition
Chitangala is part of the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative class of 2022–2023. She is known for mentoring women in leadership and advancing sustainable urban development and public health goals in Lusaka.
