The tournament will be hosted by South Korea between 20 May and 11 June 2017.

Qualified teams

A total of 24 teams qualify for the final tournament. In addition to South Korea who qualified automatically as hosts, the other 23 teams qualify from six separate continental competitions.

Organization

The following were key milestones in the organization of the tournament:

  • Details of the volunteer programme, which was launched on 1 November 2016, was released on 18 October 2016.[5]
  • The official posters were released on 27 October 2016.[6]
  • Venue package tickets went on sale on 1 November 2016,[7] while general ticket sales began on 2 January 2017.[8] All-out ticket sales kicked off on 16 March 2017.[9]
  • NCT Dream were appointed as Local Organising Committee ambassadors, and were also chosen to sing the official song of the tournament.[10]

Draw

The draw was held on 15 March 2017, 15:00 KST (UTC+9), at the Suwon Artrium in Suwon, South Korea.[11][12] Two Argentine players who have won the FIFA U-20 World Cup, Diego Maradona and Pablo Aimar, participated in the draw.[13] Minho Choi from the South Korean idol group SHINee also participated in the draw.[14]

The 24 teams were drawn into six groups of four teams, with hosts South Korea being allocated to position A1. The teams were seeded into their respective pots based on their results in the last five FIFA U-20 World Cups (more recent tournaments weighted more heavily), with bonus points awarded to confederation champions. Teams from the same confederation could not be drawn against each other for the group stage.[15]

Matchs

Zambia 2-1 Portugal

Zambia came out on top in an intriguing tussle with Portugal to get the edge in FIFA U-20 World Cup Korea Republic 2017 Group C, winning 2-1. Both sides set up playing to their strengths: Portugal limiting the space, favouring their technical prowess; Zambia sitting deep, containing and looking to strike on the break. Chances came at both ends, with Zambia being saved by Moses Nyondo – blocking Diogo Goncalves goal-bound strike, before the game kicked up a gear after the break. The African champions started the quicker and made it count. Enock Mwepu’s shot wrong-footed Diogo Costa and, though the keeper produced a fine reflex save, Edward Chilufya was on hand to tap in. With that, the game opened up. Portugal were not short of opportunities. Diogo Goncalves and Andre Ribeiro both had their share, as well as the creative Xadas – who shone in the first period and waned in the second – but spurned them. So, when Fashion Sakala struck a solo second with 15 minutes to go, you thought it would not be the two-time U-20 World Cup winners’ day. Shimmying past two defenders, the Spartak Moscow man fired in at the near post to seal the win. Helder struck in stoppage time following Mangani Banda’s save, but it was too little, too late.

Zambia 4-2 Iran

A breath-taking revival by Zambia saw them move into the next round of the FIFA U-20 World Cup Korea Republic 2017, coming from two down to beat Iran 4-2. Zambia had shown defensive frailties early on and the theme continued as Mangani Banda’s miscued clearance fell straight to Reza Shekari who, after a neat stepover, slotted Iran in front. The African champions slowly grew in confidence, culminating in Fashion Sakala rattling the post with a fine header on the stroke of half-time. That progress looked to have gone up in smoke when a rash challenge on Omid Norafkan gifted Shekari another goal, this time from the penalty spot. However, the tide began to turn six minutes later. A hoofed ball by Solomon Sakala found namesake Fashion who cut inside and volleyed low to half the deficit, then drew level with one of the goals of the tournament so far. A lovely flowing move down the right resulted in Emmanuel Banda’s flick being slotted home by Enock Mwepu. With momentum flowing fiercely for those in green, Banda put them ahead following a goalmouth scramble before Patson Daka gave the win some gloss as he picked out the bottom corner from 20 yards.

Costa Rica 1-0 Zambia

Costa Rica survived a dramatic finale to reach the FIFA U-20 World Cup last 16 after they earned a 1-0 win over Group C table-toppers Zambia.

With nothing but a win able to propel Costa Rica to the next round, they got the near-perfect start. After surviving a scare as goalkeeper Erick Pineda pushed a Ngosa Nsunzu effort onto the bar, Jostin Daly took his chance soon after Jimmy Marin was brought down in the box, albeit at the second time of asking after Mangani Banda saved his penalty.

Despite already being guaranteed progression, Zambia looked the most likely to strike next, with Patson Daka twice forcing the Ticos stopper into action. Pineda’s pivotal role in keeping Costa Rica’s hopes alive was beginning to become a theme but, at the other end, the African champions were thanking the post.

Randall Leal had the chance to put both feet in the next round but his penalty rattled the upright and Banda was alive to the rebound. Pineda offered up more miracles, but it seemed to be one too few as Daka finally struck.

However, the video assistant referee proved decisive, ruling it out and seeing Costa Rica through.

Knockout Stages

In the knockout stages, if a match is level at the end of normal playing time, extra time is played (two periods of 15 minutes each) and followed, if necessary, by a penalty shoot-out to determine the winner. However, for the third place match, no extra time shall be played and the winner shall be determined by kicks from the penalty mark.

Zambia 4-3 Germany

Zambia survived a heart-stopping encounter to see off Germany 4-3 after extra-time to progress to their first FIFA U-20 World Cup quarter-final. Both sides failed to find their groove in the opening period during a disjointed first half, but there was one moment of sublime brilliance.

Philipp Ochs arced a free-kick from wide on the right flank, whipped with his left foot, that cannoned in off the underside of the bar to open the scoring. It seemed to be the injection of energy Zambia needed. Five minutes were on the clock when they levelled after the break. Enock Mwepu went for the spectacular following a deflected cross, but Emmanuel Banda was on hand to volley in following Mwepu's miscued bicycle kick.

Zambia then struck again as Fashion Sakala bagged his third of Korea Republic 2017, beating Sven Brodersen from wide on the right of the area. With nothing to lose, Germany committed more and more forward, losing the shape that kept the African champions quiet in the first half, and ultimately led to Enock Mwepu converting on the break.

But Suat Serdar’s delightful near-post flick kept the game alive before, with the last kick of the 90 minutes, substitute Jonas Arweiler slammed home to send the European side into delirium.

A cagey start to extra-time saw Daka force a good save from Brodersen before Shemmy Mayembe put Zambia back in front, this time holding out – just, with Serdar fluffing a fantastic chance – for that first ever ticket to the last eight.

Italy 3-2 Zambia

Ten-man Italy beat Zambia 3-2 after extra-time in a thrilling encounter to advance to the semi-finals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup Korea Republic 2017.

Patson Daka scored his second goal of the tournament inside the first four minutes to give the Junior Chipolopolo an early lead. Emmanuel Banda found Daka with a carefully-weighted and perfectly-timed through pass, and the forward finished the move with aplomb, chipping his shot past Andrea Zaccagno. The Italians responded with wave after wave of attack, but failed to find the crucial breakthrough. The match then took a significant turn right before half-time when, after a video assistant referee review, Giuseppe Pezzella received a straight red card for a shove on Edward Chilufya that denied an obvious goalscoring opportunity.

Against all odds, Italy scored an equaliser within five minutes at the start of the second half. Riccardo Orsolini scored his fourth of the tournament when he guided home a header from the back post after a cross by Giuseppe Panico Fashion Sakala then matched Orsolini with his fourth of the tournament in the 84th minute with a well-placed strike into the top corner from 12 yards.

Zambia thought they were through, but substitute Federico Dimarco had other ideas. The substitute curled in a superb free-kick inside Zambia's left post to send the match into extra-time. Zambia nearly scored in extra-time when substitute Kenneth Kalunga fired just wide of goal after neatly juggling the ball past Italy's defence. The Africans would be made to rue that missed opportunity. In the 110th minute, two substitutes combined to score the winning goal as Dimarco's corner kick found Luca Vido eight yards from goal and he headed in from close range to send the Italians into the U-20 World Cup semi-finals for the first time.
