Dr Chishimba Kambwili (born 3 June 1969) is a Zambian politician and member of the National Assembly of Zambia for Roan Constituency (Luanshya),[1] and held the office of Minister of Sports and Youth in the Cabinet of Zambia.

Early life and education

He was born on 3 June 1969 in Luanshya where he subsequently completed his education. He later studied Industrial Relations, Business Administration and Trade Union Studies.

Kambwili was first appointed Minister of Foreign affairs however was then moved to Ministry of Labour, then Minister of Sports and Youth. Kambwili was also Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services since 2015 and spokesperson of the PF government and party.

Dismissal

On 8 November 2016 President Edgar Lungu terminated the services of Kambwili as Minister of Information and Broadcasting and was immediately replaced with. Hon. Kampamba Mulenga, Member of Parliament for Kalulushi Constituency on the Copperbelt Province.[2] Kambwili became the first minister to be fired from the new cabinet after President Edgar Lungu was re-elected into power in the August 2016 elections. No reasons were given for the dismissal.[3]

Election challenge

On 11 November 2006, the Ndola High Court threw out a petition in which losing United Party for National Development (UPND) Roan parliamentary candidate Andrew Kayekesi challenged the election of Chishimba Kambwili as member of Parliament (MP) in the August 2016 elections. High Court judge Charles Chanda ruled that Mr Kayekesi’s allegation that Dr Kambwili bribed the electorate did not hold because his evidence and that of his witnesses was at variance.[4]

Corruption investigations

On 14 November 2016, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) confirmed placing former minister Kambwili under investigations for the accumulation of vast wealth since he started serving in government. This came a few days after President Edgar Lungu warned that he will fire all Ministers engaged in corruption. In a statement, ACC Spokesman Timothy Moono said, “Following recent media queries on whether the Anti-Corruption Commission is conducting investigations on alleged corrupt practices against Hon. Chishimba Kambwili, former Information and Broadcasting Minister, I wish to inform you that there has been an inquiry against Hon. Kambwili on allegations of corrupt practices.”[5]

Expulsion from the PF

On 22 July 2017 Kambwili was expelled from the ruling Patriotic Front, a move he described as illegal. His expulsion was announced during the PF Members of the Central Committee meeting at State House which was chaired by President Edgar Lungu.[6] Kabwili planned to hold a press briefing the following day at his house in Woodlands but canceled it citing security concerns.[7] On 24 July 2017, Kambwili announced he was going to contest his expulsion from the Patriotic Front in the courts of law and stated that he would not leave the PF because he is among the people who “suffered for it”.[8] Also expelled at the same meeting was Copperbelt Minister Mwenya Musenge.

In 2016 Kambwili was conferred with an honorarily doctorate at the California University FCE’S awarding ceremony in Lusaka whose theme was, "Cerebrating our Heroes who have impacted lives and carry their vision to the next generation”.[9]
