Malimba Nathaniel Masheke (born 17 June 1941 in Senanga District) is a retired Zambian military officer and politician. A founding member of the Zambia Army, he rose to the rank of General and held key security portfolios before entering national politics. In 1989, he was appointed as the sixth — and final — Prime Minister of Zambia, serving until August 1991 when the office was abolished ahead of the country’s return to multiparty democracy[1][2].
Early Life and Military Career
Masheke was among the founding officers of the post-independence Zambia Army, receiving military training and taking on various command and administrative roles within the force. His service was instrumental during the early years of Zambia’s unified military structure[2].
Political Career
In March 1989, President Kenneth Kaunda appointed Masheke as Prime Minister, replacing Kebby Musokotwane amid shifting political dynamics within the ruling UNIP party. His time in office culminated with the abolition of the Prime Minister role in August 1991 following constitutional reforms that paved the way for the 1991 multiparty elections[3].
