Green Eagles Football Club is a Zambian professional football club based in Choma, Southern Province, Zambia. The club plays in the Zambia Super League, the top flight of Zambian football. Founded as ZNS Green Bullets under the auspices of the Zambia National Service (ZNS), the club adopted its current name in 2005. Green Eagles are best known for their resilient style and have emerged as one of Zambia's most consistent top-tier clubs outside Lusaka and the Copperbelt.
History
Green Eagles FC was established in the 1970s as ZNS Green Bullets, the sporting wing of the Zambia National Service. In 2005, the club rebranded to Green Eagles Football Club as part of a wider ZNS sports restructuring. Based in the Southern Province town of Choma, the Eagles have traditionally relied on disciplined, physically strong squads drawn from ZNS personnel and local talent.
After several seasons in Zambia’s lower leagues, Green Eagles earned promotion to the Premier League in 2008. Despite early struggles, the club gradually established itself as a stable Super League side, avoiding relegation and developing a reputation for resilience and organization.
The 2018 season marked a turning point, with Green Eagles finishing fourth and qualifying for continental competition for the first time. Their runners-up finish in 2019 secured a historic place in the CAF Champions League. In August 2019, Eagles stunned South African giants Orlando Pirates F.C. by advancing past the preliminary round on away goals.
Since then, the club has consistently finished in the top half of the league, reaching domestic cup finals and representing Zambia in CAF competitions.
Stadium
Green Eagles play their home matches at the Choma Independence Stadium, a 5,000-capacity venue located in Choma, Southern Province. The stadium, upgraded in the late 2010s, meets CAF requirements for continental fixtures and is a hub of football activity in the region. Select high-profile matches have been hosted at larger Lusaka or Copperbelt venues to meet competition guidelines.
Ownership and Structure
The club is owned and funded by the Zambia National Service, a branch of Zambia’s defense and national development sector. ZNS provides technical, logistical, and financial support, while club management is overseen by a board appointed by the ZNS command. The chairman is Jim K. Kafumukache, with Perry Mutapa serving as head coach since 2023.
